For Her I Can Be... A Hero

The reason I haven't posted any comic strips or anything else lately is that i've been working on a painting. The new Tijuana Flats (awesome burritos!) in Palm Beach Gardens is having a contest where you paint a ceiling tile and they'll put it in the restaurant (winner gets cash & gift card). I've never painted before but entered anyways, and let me tell you painting is a way bigger pain in the ass than drawing is. I was going to do a collage of characters from George Romero's Dead trilogy but there would've been too many details to be seen on a ceiling. Ended up painting Sam Kieth's The Maxx (greatest comic book of all time).

The poster of The Maxx by Sam Kieth that inspired my painting.

Rough sketch using markers.

Colors filled in and edges smoothed out.

Finished painting with details and shading completed.

I was going to have the city scene in the background but everytime I tried to do it I thought it didn't look right. Ended up going with a simple black background. For my first time painting since probally elementary school, I don't think I did a bad job at all.

Dropped the painting off today and it should be on their ceiling soon. As far as I know the winner will be picked on Cinco de Mayo. Saw some of the other tiles, the one of Spider-Man fighting Venom whose holding a burrito and hot sauce was hilarious.

Going to enjoy the rest of my day off,
Michael "Mike" Favata
