What's On Your Pull List?

This evening I went down to Past Present Future for their 4th of July weekend sale. PPF is by far the best comic book store in Palm Beach County and I consider them my LCS. They've got a huge selection of back issues and a knowledgeable staff. It looks like they're workin' with the Supercon folks to bring more events to the area and the store.

While I was there I picked up,

Comics
The Avengers Vol. 3 #43-45,47,49, The Defenders Vol. 1 #115,127-129,141-142,144,146,149-151, Invincible #73, Invincible Iron Man Annual #1, Iron Man Vol. 2 #7-9, Iron Man: Bad Blood #1-4, Iron Man Vol. 3 #5-6,8,11,15-18,33-34,36,39,53-54,59-61, Secret Avengers #2 & #2 Deodato 50/50 variant, Thunderbolts #2,5,38,41,45,54,55

Graphic Novels
Essential: Avengers Vol. 5, Essential: Iron Man Vol. 2, Fantastic Four: The New Fantastic Four

Posters
Agents of Atlas, Young Avengers

So I finally signed up for the subscription service at PPF. I mainly buy comics online but it's a pain in the ass with new stuff since there's so many release dates to keep track of. So much easier to pick everything up at once every couple of weeks.

My current comic book pull list,

  • Atlas (Marvel)
  • The Avengers Vol. 4 (Marvel)
  • Fear Agent (Dark Horse)
  • Hawkeye & Mockingbird (Marvel)
  • Invincible (Image)
  • Invincible Iron Man (Marvel)
  • Iron Man: Legacy (Marvel)
  • Secret Avengers (Marvel)
  • S.H.I.E.L.D. Vol. 2 (Marvel)
  • The Walking Dead (Image)

Speaking of comics, I've gotten alot of work done on the project i've hinted at in previous posts. I'm in the process of drawing/publishing/writing a comic book, it's horror-related & should be more than one issue. Right now the rough draft of the story for the first issue is completed and i'm working on the characters and minor details. There will definately be more news on the blog as I get closer to finishing the book.

    Vacation, Had To Get Away

If you read this blog you'd know I was in Miami this weekend for Supercon. Had even more fun this year than I did at last year's Supercon.

    Some notable guest experiences,
    • Jim McCann - One of the nicest people i've met in the comic industry, a great rep for Marvel and answered all my ridiculous questions.
    • Filip Sablik - Super friendly, does a great job of promoting Top Cow.
    • Lloyd Kaufman - Quite possibly insane in the most wonderful way.
    • John Wesley Shipp - Enjoyed talking to him at the VIP Party.
    • Dana Snyder - Hilarious, super nice, his voices make you crack up instantly.
The only things I didn't enjoy about the weekend,
    • The weather -  Way too hot inside and outside of the convention.
    • Photography - Nearly all the pics I took turned out bad or I didn't take enough.
    • Late Night - I think i've gotten too old for the anime crowd that pretty much is every late night event at the con.
    • Scheduling - I should've gone on friday, the comic book VIP party was probally a blast.
Everything I brought to get signed (over 20 comics) was signed except for 1 comic because I couldn't find Alex Saviuk anywhere at the convention.

Saturday I got my signings done early, went to a awesome Troma Q&A w/ Lloyd Kaufman. Asked a bunch of nerdy Avengers questions at the Marvel Panel. Saw a couple Supercon Wrestling matches, Chun Li vs. Captain America was hilarious. Went to the media VIP party and hung out with celebrities, ended up at the same restaurant as the wrestlers afterwards. Wandered the hotel and ended up checking out some of the late night aspects of the convention. Around 1am it was like some sort of anime wild west where anything goes, lawlessness lol.

On sunday morning I did a bunch of shopping at the vendors area of the convention floor, I didn't find the early Walking Dead issues I wanted but found some gems. I now have every single original Avengers & Iron Man annual from the 60's to the 2000's.

I think this is the majority of what I picked up,

    Books/Graphic Novels...
American Splendor: Another Dollar, The Darkness: Origins Vol. 1, The Darkness: Accursed Vol. 1, Direct Your Own Damn Movie! signed by Lloyd Kaufman, Essential The Incredible Hulk Vol. 1, Essential Man-Thing Vol. 1, Image Holiday Special 2005, Invincible Vol. 4: Head Of The Class, Invincible Vol. 10: Who's The Boss?, Wanted

    Comics...
Adolescent Radioactive Blackbelt Hamsters In 3-D #1-4, The Avengers Vol. 1 Annual #1 (King-Size Special), The Avengers Vol. 4 #1, Citizen V and The V-Battalion #1-3, Critters #1-6, Dynamo 5 #1-4, Iron Man Vol. 1 Annual #1-2, Iron Man Legacy #2, Marvel Preview #2, Negative Burn Vol. 2 #1-17, Velocity Vol. 2 #1 PPF blank sketch cover, Velocity Vol. 2 #1 Tate's sketch cover

    Movie Posters...
Battle Royale, Clerks., Kick-Ass, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre '74, Lucio Fulci's Zombie

and of course I got Dana Snyder to sketch Zombie Master Shake.

After the con got lost trying to find my bank in Miami, it's a huge city and very very confusing. Went to the Miccosukee casino and won a small jackpot and managed to leave the casino without losing it!

Checked out on monday, went to Hong Kong City for Dim Sum, stopped at Past Present Future and picked up my cat from the clinic (who is very happy to be home).

    See y'all at Supercon 2011,

For Her I Can Be... A Hero

The reason I haven't posted any comic strips or anything else lately is that i've been working on a painting. The new Tijuana Flats (awesome burritos!) in Palm Beach Gardens is having a contest where you paint a ceiling tile and they'll put it in the restaurant (winner gets cash & gift card). I've never painted before but entered anyways, and let me tell you painting is a way bigger pain in the ass than drawing is. I was going to do a collage of characters from George Romero's Dead trilogy but there would've been too many details to be seen on a ceiling. Ended up painting Sam Kieth's The Maxx (greatest comic book of all time).

The poster of The Maxx by Sam Kieth that inspired my painting.

    Rough sketch using markers.

Colors filled in and edges smoothed out.

Finished painting with details and shading completed.

I was going to have the city scene in the background but everytime I tried to do it I thought it didn't look right. Ended up going with a simple black background. For my first time painting since probally elementary school, I don't think I did a bad job at all.

Dropped the painting off today and it should be on their ceiling soon. As far as I know the winner will be picked on Cinco de Mayo. Saw some of the other tiles, the one of Spider-Man fighting Venom whose holding a burrito and hot sauce was hilarious.

Going to enjoy the rest of my day off,
    Michael "Mike" Favata

    Burt Reynolds Vs. Dinosaur

Put another "comic" up, it's Burt Reynolds (from Smokey and the Bandit) fighting a Dinosaur, that pretty much sums it up.

The webcomic is a place for my silly doodles, this is not the comic project i've hinted at in previous posts.

    I Can Has Blog Post?

I don't know if anyone reads this but needless to say I haven't updated this blog in a very long time. I'm working on the website again and there should be some noticeable additions and changes soon.

Collection wise i've added a huge amount of graphic novels and i've got nearly every single issue (and all variant printings) of The Walking Dead. All I need now is the first printing of #2 and the first printing of issue #1 with the black warning label (i've got the first printing with the white warning label).

Of course I like putting a picture with the words so here's a comic strip I did recently. Hand drawn w/ pencil, Pilot Pen & Sharpie, then I scanned it and touched it up with an Image Editor.

Sure I haven't done anything lately with my comic book (that I still plan on doing) but hey at least I finished a comic strip.

I don't pee where I buy my coffee,
